Folha esplêndida dividida em cinco compartimentos; antes de 1909, parte de um belo Livro de Horas (Nova York, Morgan Biblioteca e Museu, ms. M.1003).

Somente um mestre brilhante poderia ter pintado esta grande obra de arte.

Numa auréola dourada e laranja formada por serafins, Deus Pai está sentado em seu trono celestial. Um degrau abaixo está o menino Jesus segurando a cruz. Apresentada em sua manifestação humana, a criança é uma referência simbólica de que Cristo está pronto para descer à terra para cumprir seu sacrifício.

Duas santas ficam à direita e à esquerda, adoradas por centenas de anjos. O texto anuncia que Deus enviou o Anjo Gabriel. Enquanto Maria está sentada em sua cela lendo, São Lucas registra a história em um pergaminho. As almas do purgatório aguardam a sua libertação.

O trabalho do iluminador lembra Hugo van der Goes e mostra conhecimento das composições e modelos de Rogier van der Weyden, sugerindo que o artista veio da Flandres antes de se estabelecer para trabalhar em Paris.

God in Majesty – Master o Jacques de Luxembourg, Book of Hours – France, Paris, c. 1465  –  (M 1003)

Splendid leaf divided into five compartments; before 1909 part of a fine Book of Hours (New York, Morgan Library and Museum, ms. M.1003).

Only a brilliant master could have painted this great piece of art. In a golden and orange aureole formed by seraphim, God the Father sits on his heavenly throne. One step lower sits baby Jesus holding the cross. Shown in his human manifestation, the child is a symbolic reference that Christ is ready to descend to earth to fulfil his sacrifice.

Two female saints stand to the right and left, worshipped by hundreds of angels. The text announces that God sent the Angel Gabriel. While Mary sits in her cell reading, St. Luke records the story on a text scroll. Souls in purgatory wait for their deliverance.

The illuminator’s work their deliverance. The illuminator’s work recalls Hugo van der Goes and shows knowledge of compositions and models by Rogier van der Weyden, suggesting the artist came from Flanders before he settled to work in Paris.
