“Ó clementíssima Virgem Maria, minha soberana e Mãe augusta, Senhora do Monte Serrat, venho lançar-me no seio de Vossa misericórdia, e pôr desde agora e para sempre a minha alma e meu corpo debaixo da Vossa salvaguarda e da Vossa bendita proteção.

Confio-Vos e entrego nas Vossas mãos todas as minhas esperanças e consolações, todas as minhas penas e misérias, bem como o curso e o fim da minha vida, para que, por Vossa intercessão e por Vossos merecimentos, todas as minhas ações se dirijam e se disponham segundo a vontade de Vosso Divino Filho, Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, e que minha alma depois dessa vida possa alcançar a salvação eterna. Nossa Senhora de MontSerrat

A existência de uma capela erguida em dedicação à Maria em Montserrat, nas montanhas da Catalunha, na Espanha, data do século IX.

A imagem de Maria ali venerada era chamada de “Moreneta”, por ser de cor escura. Conta-se que a imagem teria sido levada para Barcelona por San Pedro, e que já era lá venerada desde o século VI.

 À invasão dos mouros, a imagem foi tirada de Barcelona e escondida pelos fiéis numa caverna, de modo que lá ficasse protegida dos bárbaros.

Quase dois séculos depois, em um sábado do mês de abril, alguns pequenos pastores apascentavam o seu rebanho às margens do Rio Llobregat quando, subitamente, apareceu no espaço sobre uma montanha um grupo de estrelas que brilhava mais do que o próprio sol, e um coro angelical pôs em êxtase os pastorinhos que, não tendo ideia do que se tratava, contaram o ocorrido aos seus patrões que, por sua vez, informaram o fato ao vigário de Olesa.

O fenômeno se repetia sábado após sábado, até que autoridades eclesiásticas e políticas subiram à montanha para tentar descobrir o que ali ocorria.

Encontraram ali uma caverna e, nela entrando, depararam com uma bela estátua de Maria com o Menino Jesus nos braços, já enegrecida pelo tempo.

A imagem foi levada para Manresa, onde seria venerada, em solene romaria.

Todavia, em determinado ponto do caminho, em Montserrat, a estátua repentinamente ganhou tal peso que ninguém conseguiu tirá-la do lugar, o que foi entendido como o desejo de Maria de ser venerada exatamente naquele local.

Assim decidido, conseguiram novamente remover a estátua e carregá-la para uma das capelas que havia nas proximidades, onde passou a ocorrer uma série de maravilhas que atraía multidões de todas as partes: os cegos voltavam a ver, os mudos falavam, e pecadores se convertiam diante dos prodígios.

Ao lado da capela havia um mosteiro que foi elevado para a categoria de abadia, que trouxe grande divulgação para o santuário.

Todavia, o acontecimento que até hoje garante a importância do Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Montserrat foi a proclamação de Maria, sob esse título, como patrona da Catalunha, feita pelo Papa Leão XIII.

Os filhos de São Bento foram os primeiros a propagar a devoção à Nossa Senhora de Montserrat nas Américas.

No Brasil, foi fundado um santuário para Nossa Senhora de Montserrat na cidade de Santos, no ano de 1610, que doado aos monges de São Bento.

“O most clement Virgin Mary, my sovereign and august Mother, Lady of Monte Serrat, I come to throw myself into the bosom of Your mercy, and to place from now on and forever my soul and my body under Your safeguard and Your blessed protection.

I entrust to You and deliver into Your hands all my hopes and consolations, all my pains and miseries, as well as the course and end of my life, so that, through Your intercession and Your merits, all my actions may be directed and dispose yourselves according to the will of Your Divine Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and that my soul after this life may reach eternal salvation. Amen!”     

History

The existence of a chapel erected in dedication to Mary in Montserrat, in the mountains of Catalonia, Spain, dates back to the 9th century.

The image of Mary venerated there was called M reneta”, because it was dark in color. It is said that the image was taken to Barcelona by San Pedro, and that it had been venerated there since the 6th century.

After the invasion of the Moors, the image was taken from Barcelona and hidden by the faithful in a cave, so that it would be protected from the barbarians.

Over two centuries later, on a Saturday in April, some small shepherds were pasturing their flock on the banks of the Llobregat River when, Suddenly, a group of stars that shone brighter than the sun itself appeared in space on a mountain, and an angelic choir put the shepherd children into ecstasy who, having no idea what was going on, told their bosses what had happened, who, in turn, Once, they reported the fact to the vicar of Olesa.

The phenomenon was repeated Saturday after Saturday, until ecclesiastical and political authorities went up to the mountain to try to discover what was happening there.

They found a cave there and, entering it, they came across a beautiful statue of Mary with the Baby Jesus in her arms, already blackened by time.

The image was taken to Manresa, where it would be venerated, in a solemn pilgrimage. However, at a certain point along the way, in Montserrat, the statue suddenly gained such weight that no one was able to remove it from its place, which was understood as Mary’s desire to be venerated in that exact location.

Thus decided, they managed to remove the statue again and carry it to one of the nearby chapels, where a series of wonders began to occur that attracted crowds from all over: the blind saw again, the mute spoke, and sinners became they converted before the prodigies.

Next to the chapel there was a monastery that was elevated to the category of abbey, which brought great publicity to the sanctuary.

However, the event that guarantees the importance of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montserrat to this day was the proclamation of Mary, under that title, as patroness of Catalonia, made by Pope Leo XIII.

The children of Saint Benedict were the first to spread devotion to Our Lady of Montserrat in the Americas. In Brazil, a sanctuary for Our Lady of Montserrat was founded in the city of Santos in 1610, which was donated to the monks of São Bento.

Réplica de Nossa Senhora de MontSerrat em sua catedral em São Paulo

A imagem da Virgem de Montserrat, conhecida popularmente como “La Moreneta” pelo tom escuro da sua pele, é uma talha românica policromada do século XII de uma grande beleza.

A figura da Virgem estende a mão direita, com a qual segura a esfera, que significa todo o universo.

Com a mão esquerda sobre o ombro do Menino, indica que aquele rei onipotente é seu filho.

O Menino Jesus abençoa com a mão direita e na esquerda segura uma pinha, símbolo de fecundidade e vida perene.

No dia 23/11/2019, a imagem que hoje se encontra em nosso altar central, chegou da Espanha em nossa paroquia (Nossa Senhora de MontSerrat de São Paulo).

Esculpida em madeira pelo artista espanhol Joan Montero. É uma réplica belíssima da imagem original com 92 cm.

E no dia 21/08/2020, a Catedral Nossa Senhora de MontSerrat de São Paulo, localizada no Largo da Batata,  recebeu a base esculpida na madeira pelo mesmo artista.

Ele se inspirou na montanha para nos relembrar do local Santo na qual a Virgem escolheu como morada.

Replica of the original

The image of the Virgin of Montserrat, popularly known as “La Moreneta”, due to the dark tone of its skin, is a polychrome Romanesque carving from the 12th century of great beauty.

The figure of the Virgin extends her right hand, with which she holds the sphere, which signifies the entire universe.

With her left hand on the Child’s shoulder, she indicates that the omnipotent king is her son.

The Baby Jesus blesses with his right hand and in his left he holds a pine cone, a symbol of fecundity and everlasting life.

On 11/23/2019, the image that is today on our central altar, arrived from Spain in our parish. Carved in wood by Spanish artist Joan Montero. It is a beautiful replica of the original image measuring 92 cm.

And on 08/21/2020 we received the base carved in wood by the same artist. He was inspired by the mountain to remind us of the Holy place in which the Virgin chose as her home.
