A Crucificação – Monastério de Santa Catarina, Sinai – Egito

Cristo está suspenso na cruz, os dois bandidos, vestidos com uma túnica sem mangas compridas. A Mãe de Deus é como Santa Maria, um nome que mantém uma tradição antes do Concílio de Éfeso de 431. O ícone também inclui a cena dos soldados romanos dividindo as vestes de Cristo.

O ícone é a representação mais antiga conhecida de Cristo morto na cruz e a primeira imagem conhecida de Cristo usando uma coroa de espinhos. Centra-se na Paixão e na natureza reconciliadora do sangue derramado na cruz. Tanto a iconografia como a técnica identificada sugerem que o ícone é originário da Terra Santa.

Christ is suspended on the cross, the two brigands, dressed in a long sleeve less tunic. The Mother of God is as Saint Mary, a name that retains a tradition before the 431 Council of Ephesus.

The icon also includes the scene of the Roman soldiers dividing the garments of Christ. The icon is the earliest known depiction of Christ lying dead on the cross, and the first known image of Christ wearing a crown of thorns. It focuses on the Passion and the between reconciliatory nature of the blood spilt on – the cross. Both the iconography and the identified technique suggest that the icon originates – from the Holy Land.
