Jesus Cristo Copta – O mais belo dos belos – Luneta com anjos e busto
de Cristo – Bawit, Mosteiro de São Apolo, século VI

Esta pintura, descoberta em 1976, mostra dois anjos voando. apoiando um
medalhão que encerra o busto de Cristo. Seu rótulo. em copta, lê-se
“Salvador”.

O anjo à direita é o “anjo de Deus”; à esquerda está o “anjo do Senhor”.

Os longos cabelos ondulados de Cristo estão repartidos ao meio e repousam
sobre seus ombros. De acordo com o texto acima do medalhão menor à
esquerda, o busto com halo que contém é do mártir Selbane.

O pintor conseguiu um efeito harmonioso ao restringir sua paleta aos tons
de ocre, com exceção dos cabelos de todas as figuras e da barba de Cristo,
cujo olhar para o céu é prejudicado pelo sombreamento abaixo dos olhos.

Lunette with angels and the bust of Christ – Bawit, Monastery of St.
Apollo, 6th/7th century

H: 165 cm, W: 330 cm

This painting, discovered in 1976, shows two angels in flight supporting a
medallion enclosing the bust of Christ. His label. in Coptic, reads
“Savior.”

The angel to the right is the “angel of God”; at the left is the “angel of
the Lord.” Christ’s long wavy hair is parted in the middle and lies on his
shoulders.

According to the text above the smaller medallion at the left, the haloed
bust it enclosed is the martyr Selbane.

The painter achieved a harmonious effect by restricting his palette to
shades of ocher, except for the hair of all the figures and the beard of
Christ whose heavenward glance is under scored by shading below his eyes.
