Moisés recebe as Tábuas da Lei

Finalmente, os Israelitas chegaram ao Santo Monte Sinai, onde Moisés tinha visto a sarça ardente. A glória do Senhor desceu sobre a montanha, que estava envolta em nuvens espessas. Moisés recebeu a ordem de subir ao Sinai para receber a Lei de Deus. As pessoas foram instruídas a permanecer no vale abaixo.

A história aparece em Êxodo 19-34.

Moisés subiu ao monte e, ao entrar na nuvem, Deus falou com ele. O Senhor deu-lhe os Dez Mandamentos, escritos pelo próprio Deus em tábuas de pedra. Moisés permaneceu no Sinai por quarenta dias.

O povo, inquieto com a ausência de Moisés, fez para si um ídolo: um bezerro de ouro. Eles proclamaram um festival e começaram a cantar e festejar na  presença de sua estátua. A irá de Deus foi despertada e ele enviou Moisés para assumir o controle dos israelitas.

Ao descer a montanha, Moisés ouviu o som da folia vindo do acampamento. Ele os encontrou enquanto dançavam diante do bezerro de ouro. Furioso, ele jogou as tábuas de Deus no chão, quebrando-as em pedaços. O povo ficou envergonhado e assustado, e Moisés os puniu. Ele queimou a estátua e a reduziu a pó. 

Então ele subiu a montanha novamente, levando consigo duas tábuas que ele mesmo havia esculpido. Neles, ele reescreveu as palavras de Deus. Moisés trouxe o segundo conjunto de tábuas do monte e as anexou na Arca da Aliança, que foi colocada no Tabernáculo do acampamento.

Moses Receives the Tablets of the Law

At last the Israelites arrived at the Holy Mountain of Sinai, where Moses had seen the burning bush. The glory of the LORD descended on the mountain, which was wreathed in thick clouds. Moses was commanded to climb Sinai to receive the Law from God. The people were told to remain in the valley below.

The story appear in Exodus 19-34.

Moses ascended the mountain and, as he entered into the cloud, God spoke to him. The LORD gave him the Ten Commandments, written by God himself on tablets of stone. Moses remained on Sinai for forty days.

The people, restless in Moses’ absence, made an idol for themselves: a golden calf. They proclaimed a festival, and set to singing and feasting in the presence of their statue. God’s anger was roused, and he sent Moses to take control of the Israelites.

As Moses descended the mountain, he heard the sound of revelry from the camp. He came upon them as they danced before the golden calf. In fury, he flung the tablets of God to the ground, smashing them into pieces. The people were ashamed and frightened, and Moses punished them. 

He burned the statue and ground it to dust. Then he went back up the mountain, taking with him two tablets he had carved himself. On these, he rewrote the words of God. Moses brought the second set of tablets down from the mountain, and enclosed them in the Ark of the Covenant, which was placed in the Tabernacle in the camp.
