Oração

“Ó Virgem Bem-aventurada, louvada e querida de todos os Santos, rogai por mim pecador, ao Vosso precioso Filho.

Estrela dos Anjos, formosura dos arcanjos e dos santos patriarcas, Santíssima coroa dos mártires e das virgens, ajudai-me, Senhora, naquela verdadeira hora de minha morte, para que possa ter ingresso minha alma em Vossa preciosa morada.

Ó Bem-aventurada protetora dos cristãos, Virgem Santíssima, nas Vossas mãos, antes do sono, eu entrego a minha alma extenuada de fadiga, e que Vosso Santo Filho me ampare com a sua Santa Glória.

Livrai-me, Mãe Santíssima, de meus inimigos. Que eles tenham olhos e não me vejam. Que me procurem e não me encontrem. Das maldades que o mundo tem como artifícios, livrai-me! Livrai-me da morte inesperada, para que eu possa morrer em Vossa Glória.

Mãe misericordiosa, tende piedade de mim!”

História

Pelágio Amado, um fidalgo português do tempo do Conde Dom Henrique, ao enviuvar, decidiu-se por consagrar a sua vida à oração e à penitência, e, assim, abandonou a corte. Foi para a ermida de São Miguel, em Braga, à procura do Frei Lourenço, para que lhe aceitasse como discípulo.

Frei Lourenço, a princípio, duvidou que Pelágio fosse capaz de segui-lo em vida tão austera: todavia, a vida de santidade que Pelágio desenvolveu admirou ao próprio mestre. Cada um vivia em uma cela própria, levando vida extremamente pobre.

Certa noite, Pelágio viu uma enorme claridade que subia do meio do vale e contou para o seu mestre. Decidiram que ambos vigiariam na noite seguinte, e eis que ambos de fato viram o resplendor que emanava de uma das pedras, iluminando quase todo o vale. Na manhã do dia seguinte, foram investigar as razões daquele fenômeno e, para surpresa dos eremitas, encontraram, no local do qual emanava tão intensa luz, uma imagem da Virgem Maria muito antiga.

Cheios de felicidade, ajoelharam-se e agradeceram a Deus por tal graça. Imediatamente mudaram as suas celas para aquele local, onde fizeram uma ermida na qual depositaram a santa imagem, cheios de reverência. Espalhou-se, assim, a fama de Nossa Senhora da Abadia, e os seus milagres foram se difundindo pelas terras portuguesas.

O culto à Nossa Senhora da Abadia, também conhecida como Santa Maria do Bouro, foi trazido para o Brasil, onde é padroeira de várias cidades mineiras, e onde é cultuada em algumas regiões de Goiás.

“O Blessed Virgin, praised and beloved of all Saints, pray for me, a sinner, to Your precious Son.

Star of the Angels, beauty of the archangels and holy patriarchs, Most Holy Crown of martyrs and virgins, help me, Lady, in that true hour of my death, so that my soul may enter Your precious abode.

O Blessed protector of Christians, Holy Virgin, in Into your hands, before sleep, I deliver my exhausted soul fatigue, and may Your Holy Son support me with His Holy Glory.

Deliver me, Holy Mother, from my enemies. May they have eyes and don’t see me. May they look for me and not find me. Of evil that the world has as artifices, deliver me! Deliver me from death unexpected, so that I can die in Your Glory.

Merciful mother, have mercy on me!”

History

Pelágio Amado, a Portuguese nobleman from the time of Count Dom Henrique, upon becoming a widow, decided to consecrate his life to prayer and penance, and thus left the court. He went to the hermitage of São Miguel, in Braga, looking for Friar Lourenço, so that he would accept him as a disciple.

Friar Lourenço, at first, doubted that Pelagius would be able to follow him in such an austere life: however, the life of holiness that Pelagius developed admired the master himself. Each lived in their own cell, leading an extremely poor life.

One night, Pelagius saw a huge light rising from the middle of the valley and told his master. They decided that they would both watch the following night, and behold, they both actually saw the glow emanating from one of the stones, illuminating almost the entire valley. On the morning of the following day, they went to investigate the reasons for this phenomenon and, to the surprise of the hermits, they found, in the place from which such intense light emanated, a very ancient image of the Virgin Mary.

Filled with happiness, they knelt down and thanked God for such a grace. They immediately moved their cells to that location, where they created a hermitage in which they deposited the holy image, full of reverence. Thus, the fame of Our Lady of the Abbey spread, and her miracles spread throughout Portuguese lands.

The cult of Our Lady of the Abbey, also known as Santa Maria do Bouro, was brought to Brazil, where she is the patron saint of several cities in Minas Gerais, and where she is worshiped in some regions of Goiás.
