O Jardim das Delicias Terrenas – Hieronymous Bosch

Eis o famoso tríptico “O Jardim das Delícias Terrenas” de Hieronymus Bosch, que é composto por três painéis:

1. Painel esquerdo: mostra o casamento entre Adão e Eva. Os coelhos atrás de Eva simbolizam o comando de serem frutíferos e encherem a Terra.

2. Painel central: semelhante ao painel esquerdo, aparenta ser uma continuação da vida paradisíaca. No entanto, aqueles familiarizados com a simbologia da época, perceberão que o presente é retratado como a humanidade se entregando ao pecado da luxúria. O painel central está repleto de referências à sexualidade.

3. Painel direito: representa o inferno, onde aqueles que persistem no pecado acabam. Há uma pintura magnífica de fogo neste painel.

Garden of Earthly Delights

This triptych is Bosch’ best-known work of art. Although it has not always been well understood throughout the centuries, the central parts of its interpretation are beyond doubt.

The left panel shows the marriage between Adam and Eve. The bunnies behind Eve symbolize the command to man: be fruitful and replenish the earth.

The center panel is very similar to the left panel and thus seems to be a continuation of the paradisiacal life. But for those familiar with the symbolism which often comes from the Middle Dutch, will notice that the present is depicted here starring humankind reveling in the sin of lust. The central panel is rife with references to sexuality.

Whoever perseveres herein, as Bosch tells us, will end up in hell on the far right with a magnificently painted fire.
